Celebrating Our Climate
A
n Essential Climate Education Framework

Level Three (9-10 year olds)

Communicating Climate Processes - Prime symbols:

Breath – Our greatest teacher; enhanced meditations on the breath, especially the out-breath; all living things breathe

Which inspires in us the combined senses of

Change  -the art of conserving forms or simple negentropy: effort required to sustain a form (Example: classroom tidied up, we drink water and eat food )
And
Stewardship
–simple notions of civics and conservation practice; enjoying harmony with all

Which in turn opens us to the potential of the following great symbols:

Thermodynamics -introducing convection (advection and conduction); thermal imaging; land-sea breezes; everything is constantly warming and cooling; solar thermal energy; evaporation and condensation

Trace -Tiny proportions – imagining a fraction of 0.1% ( part of one step/bean/pebble in a thousand)

Gases – Oxygen, Nitrogen, Argon constitute 99.9% of Atmosphere (999/1000 beans) plus other gases (1/1000 beans)

Air – celebrating its existence; feeling and using its forces; its wonderful capacity for convection

Invisible – exploring what is not seen by its impacts; invisible air pollution

Water – water cycle (clouds rain rivers oceans); snow/ice/clouds albedo; cloud types; cloud spotting with cameras, pencils, paints etc

Sun – introducing our solar system; the uneven heating of planet earth = driver of weather as we know it; introducing weather forecasting.
